CHENNAI: About 320 protesting workers of mobile accessories maker Foxconn, Sriperumbudur, were arrested in the wee hours on Sunday, police said. The workers, who have been staying away from work and staging a sit-in protest, were remanded in custody and lodged in Vellore Central Prison.
Those arrested, included CPM-backed CITU state general secretary A Soundararajan, who have been demanding wage revision and regularisation of their services, police said.
In a statement issued here, CPM state secretary G Ramakrishnan condemned the arrest as "anti-labour" and demanded immediate release of all those who were arrested. Instead of intervening in the dispute through the labour department and resolving the issues, the government had acted in an anti-democratic manner, he said.
